Flexographic printing is a widely used technique for high-volume print production on flexible packaging materials. Substrate Width
The most fundamental difference between narrow and wide web flexo printing lies in the width of the substrate being printed. Narrow web printing typically handles substrates with a width of up to 25 inches, while wide web printing can accommodate substrates ranging from 25 to 100 inches in width.
Roll Size
Closely related to substrate width is the size of the printing roll used. Narrow web printing uses rolls with a smaller diameter, typically ranging from 18 to 24 inches, while wide web printing employs larger rolls with diameters of 30 to 42 inches. This difference in roll size affects the machine’s capacity and the amount of ink that can be loaded.
Printing Speed
Wide web flexo presses are typically capable of operating at higher speeds compared to narrow web presses. The wider substrate allows for a larger print area, enabling faster printing rates. Wide web presses can achieve speeds of up to 1,200 feet per minute, while narrow web presses typically operate at speeds around 600 feet per minute.
Ink Capacity
The larger roll size in wide web printing allows for a greater ink capacity compared to narrow web printing. Wide web presses can accommodate ink fountains with larger volumes, enabling longer print runs without the need for frequent ink changes. This is particularly advantageous when using high-opacity inks or printing on substrates that require multiple passes.

Narrow and wide web flexo printing offer different levels of print quality. Wide web printing generally produces higher quality prints due to the wider substrate and larger print area. The wider substrate provides better stability, reducing the risk of registration errors and ensuring sharper print results.

Narrow web printing is ideal for short to medium print runs, narrow substrates, and labels. Wide web printing is better suited for long print runs, wide substrates, and high-volume packaging applications.
